Warsaw City Hall There are countless reasons to fall in love with Warsaw

Warsaw for the Disabled

Unfortunately, Warsaw is not a city that is very friendly to those with special needs. There are still many improvements to be made in terms of the availability of transportation and the access to buildings and public spaces for the physically challenged, the visually impaired and the blind. But a significant portion of these barriers can be successfully overcome.

URBAN TRANSPORTATION

In Warsaw, every bus line has vehicles adapted for disabled people: there are buses with floors that may be lowered by the driver, which helps to facilitate boarding, and these buses also have a designated place for wheelchairs, with special belts to secure the chair. These buses are indicated on the time schedule with a square bracket around the arrival time, eg. [10:22]. The buses also have facilities for people with reduced vision – handrails and handles, and all buttons and signs are in contrasting colours. Some buses and trams are equipped with special screens, displaying the name of the stop, while other vehicles have audio information about the route.
All Warsaw metro stations are equipped with lifts and ramps to allow access to the platform. Every platform also has a safety zone, where the floor closest to the edge of the platform is slightly 'raised' and with a roughened surface which may be felt through shoes. Audio information about the opening and closing of the doors, and the next metro stop is also provided. When entering and exiting, do mind the gap, as the distance between the platform and the wagon is about 10 cm.
