The oldest building at Warsaw University,
and the seat of the rector’s office.
Built in the 17th century as a royal villa on the suburbs of Warsaw, it was the favourite seat of King Jan Kazimierz and took its name from him, which is still used to this day. Stanisław August Poniatowski set up a university for noble youths and gave it the name of 'The Knight's School'; Tadeusz Kościuszko, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz and Józef Sowiński were among its students. In 1817-1831 the palace was the seat of the Warsaw Secondary School, which was attended by Fryderyk Chopin.
